On the 13th September a movie crew came to talk to Ashton. Ashton has been doing a holiday programme called Kelly Sports. They are making a movie to advertise the programme. Ashton is about 3 years younger than all the other children who they are looking at.
We are very excited to announce that Ashton has got the part. Way to go Ashton!
Today the winners were announced for the Bus Colouring Competition which was run by Ashton Cook, Jackson Downie and Isabella Evans. We celebrated the hard work by Deb and Gail who always make sure we are transported to and from school and all our school trips. Thank you so much Deb and Gail.
First we recapped yesterday and reminded ourselves about being a we player not a me player.
We spoke about the positives and negatives of working in a team.
We spoke about ways to deal with the negatives. What happens if people don't get on? We don't have to be friends to work together. We work together to complete a goal.
Sometimes you start off not getting on but working together can make you get on more.
If something goes wrong what do we do? Try to sort it out first and use our words. Sometimes we need to say it several times. Sometimes we don't get what we want but we have to learn how to deal with it. Yes, that's life!
We got into a group and democratically chose a gopher. Some groups found this easy and some struggled between the arguments.
As a team we had to decide what we see or hear when bosses boss and a leader leads.
We recorded our ideas about bosses and leaders.
We spoke about me vs we players.
We then shared our ideas with Sally. We used our manners and good listening.
We then looked at what research says. We related the information to great leaders like Obama, John Key and contrasted this with Trump. We realised that Trump is organised, focused and enthusiastic. Trump is not positive, honest, tolerant, adaptable and calm.
Sometimes when we get feedback we have to hear things that we don't want to hear.
We talked about empathy and what this means.
We compared a leader with a team member and realised that there are a load of the same qualities with a few extras.
We listened to the instructions for The Clapping Game.
We had to clap together and at speed.
When we hear the number we do that many quick claps.
We were honest and sat down if we clapped wrong. Zero caught out a few of us.
We had a clap off with Tama and Thomas H. Tama was the winner by a narrow margin.
We spoke about dealing with conflict because that is part of life. We have to use our lambic system or shark brain. We use this when faced with danger.
It deals with emotion and gets us out of danger.
If we use our shark brain to deal with problems then we do not have success as we end up fighting or arguing.
Our prefrontal cortex is our dolphin. The shark brain is in the centre and the dolphin is in the front and helps us with reasoning, our personality and problem solving.
We have a better chance of solving things with our dolphin brain.
We use our WITS.
Talk to someone we can trust (teacher, friends, parents)
Say an I statement: Please stop that as that hurts my heart
If we use our shark brain you may end up yelling and causing more of a conflict.
Harold had a problem that zebra was being a ball hog.
Harold came out. We did some air waves.
We spoke about sharing, using I statements like: 'Zebra, I feel sad when you hog the ball, please make sure everyone has a go.'
Harold gave us a Harold Sticker.
He told us a few jokes
What is brown and sticky? A stick.
What has 2 legs but can't walk? A pair of pants
Where do bees go to the toilet? BP station
What is green and hangs from trees? Giraffe snot... Ewwwwwww!
Harold was a shocker!
We have all enjoyed learnt from Sally and Harold as part of our Life Education programme.
Today we went to the Science roadshow. We listened to information about sound and how sound can be changed. We saw some experiments and made lots of predictions. We made noise and the boys made 106 decibels and the girls made 108 decibels. A truck driving down the road is about 70 decibels. Pitch is the highness and lowness of sound.
We spoke about sound levels and sound waves. They used flames.
By increasing the frequency and volume the flames got taller.
We read the context boards and gave the experiments a go.
There were so many experiments.
There was a competition too. We had to look at some experiments and describe what was happening.
Ruby and Kate won the prize. It was a purple dragon each that was printed on a 3D printer.
